Horizontal exhaust for gas water heater

0 votes
I have a water heater in the garage that is venting horizontally through the side wall of the garage. I am asking a plumber to increase the size of the water heater but he is telling me he cannot do so without changing the configuration of the exhaust from horizontal to vertical and building some sort of chimeny that will run up the side of the house to the roof. Since this is a 2 story house, this will be rather expensive, so i'm trying to figure out if the horizontal venting of a water heater is allowed. I have found information regaring the elevation of the vent pipe (1/4" per linear foot) but nothing about termination. Can you help?

Hi Dimitriss,

You didn't mention one very important detail: what type of a gas water heater you have and what type are you planning to get?

Power vented tank (with motor blower on top and PVC pipe) - more details are here / can be vented horizontally - http://checkthishouse.com/2991/water-heater-pvc-vent-pipe-and-power-venting.html

Most common natural draft tank (with draft hood on top) - requires a chimney - http://checkthishouse.com/49/water-heater-vent-pipe.html

Tankless - based on manufacturer's requirements, in most cases horizontal venting is OK

Direct vent type (tank and tankless) - horizontal and / or vertical depending on model / manufacturer.

Let me know if you have more question but please, be specific / provide detailed information about this appliance. Just click "comment" below.
