What the requirements for a gas water heater installation in a garage? Is it OK to install gas water heater directly on the garage's floor?

There is a general requirement for gas water heater installations that would apply to the garage area:  gas water heater should not installed in any location where gasoline, flammable vapors or liquids, and combustible materials are likely to be present.

The reasoning is very simple, placing any source of combustion in such location could result in an explosion or fire. However, in some cases garage location might be the only available choice so you have to follow the code and safety requirements.
